WELCOME BACK LETTER FROM PRINCIPAL VERDINER

September 3, 2019

Dear TCCS Families,

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to TCCS for the 2019-2020 school year! We had a successful school year last year and are looking forward to building on that success while we learn and grow together as a community. For those of you new to TCCS we welcome you to an incredibly dedicated and dynamic community. At TCCS, we focus every day on providing every member of our community (students, staff and families) a safe and positive learning environment where continued growth for student learners is our key focus.

This year we are going through our final growth spurt towards becoming a Pre-K -8th grade school model! The summer has been filled with planning, hiring, organizing, collaborating and trillions of emails—in preparation for our phase II expansion into a dual-site school. With advocacy by our elected officials, Teachers College and parents we have secured more funding, supports and an expeditious renovation in the Lower School and reorganization in the Upper School! We now have two Pre-K sections and will have our first graduating 8th Grade Middle School Seniors!!!

We send out a warm THANK YOU to you all for being patient, supportive and “on-call” during this transition. In addition, our Parent Association Executive Board members have been incredibly supportive and proactive in helping us through this transition by communicating your messages to me and my messages to you---thank you all so much! Our custodial staff - William, Aris, Noel, Brendan, and Sean - have also been working feverishly all summer to ensure that both buildings are beautiful, clean, safe, and ready for teachers to receive your children.

    • We will continue our partnership with Noel Pointer Foundation to provide free after-school programming.

  • We are continuing our partnership with TC’s School Based Mental Health Collaboration. There will be a counseling intern assigned to each K-5 class to assist with our social emotional curriculum, Second Step, and support teachers in identifying emotional triggers and response plans

Class assignments were mailed out last week. If you did not receive an assignment letter, do not worry, there will be staff members who will be able to tell you the classroom and teacher name on the first day of school.

I am confident that we will continue to work collaboratively as we finalize the structures and systems of our fully grown Pre-k -8th grade learning community. Teachers College Community School is a special place where we act on the belief that “it takes a village”. Our first day of school will be energized and we will be ready to receive students in BOTH sites in a safe and organized manner. We will have plenty of staff and parent volunteers to assist with arrivals and any questions you may have. I ask that we all continue to work collaboratively to ensure that the start of the year is exciting and welcoming to our students, families and staff.

We also hope to see everyone at “Curriculum Night” on Thursday, September 12, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m at the Lower School and Thursday, September 19, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m at the Upper School. We value and rely upon the partnerships between teachers and families, as they are paramount to the success of all of our students. Your presence makes a difference! You will receive a flyer with additional information.

We are looking forward to a GREAT school year!
